Newcastle United are set to release talented young striker Lewis McNall on a free transfer when the club’s retained list is announced, according to a report from the Chronicle.

The 20-year-old forward, who has spent 13 years with Newcastle’s academy sides, suffered a frustrating season which has seen him ruled out through a knee injury for the entire campaign.

That injury has meant the striker has been unable to build on his impressive performances during Newcastle’s run to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup in 2017, which included McNall scoring a winner against Sunderland in the Fifth Round of the competition, but it now appears he will be looking for a new club in the summer.

OPINION

McNall will be feeling very frustrated right now having endured an injury hit campaign and now having been released by Newcastle at the end of his contract. However, the 20-year-old has shown with some impressive displays for Newcastle’s youth teams that he has the potential tp perform well at a high level, and him being made available for a free transfer allow him the potential freedom to secure a move to a club that can give him some first team involvement. At the age of 20 it is vital that the young forward manages to start playing first team football. for him to build his experience and knowledge of how to perform in matches that really matter to the club your representing. Even if McNall has to move to a lower league side to rebuild his career, it could still work out to be the best thing for the youngster, there will be a few clubs who you would expect to be interested in giving him the opportunity to develop his talent at first team level. McNall will be hoping that when and if he finds a new club he can demonstrate why Newcastle were wrong to release him this summer, and the Magpies could well regret that decision if he goes onto to have a successful career elsewhere.
