The Dubai-based Bin Zayed Group who are looking to buy Newcastle United have dismissed claims of ‘big news’ for the club’s supporters on Friday, according to journalist Mark Douglas.

The Chronicle reporter revealed the news on his personal Twitter account, stating that he asked a Bin Zayed Group source about claims from @dhalajmy that there would be ‘big news’ for Newcastle.

However, Douglas revealed that the source’s response was: “Never heard of him”.

OPINION

It’s difficult to believe anything surrounding this potential Newcastle takeover, so it’s best to take everything with a pinch of salt and rely on a few trusted journalists. Douglas is one of those, and it’s clear that he has his finger on the pulse from a Bin Zayed point of view, as well as a Newcastle one. When you hear claims of ‘big news’ on a specific date, it’s hard not to be skeptical. There have been so many mooted takeover attempts at St James’ Park over the years that it never feels real, even when there is supposed to be something special happening. At the time of writing on Friday, though, nothing ‘big’ has yet occurred in regards to Newcastle or a potential takeover. This kind of speculation and gossip-mongering is what Newcastle supporters find so insufferable. They don’t want to hear it at all; all they want are the cold, hard facts. However, those are difficult to come by. Still, at least Douglas has provided some clarity here.
