Jonjo Shelvey has spoken recently on what has been a tough season this year in the Premier League with Newcastle.

The 27-year old was on the score sheet in the Magpies’ final fixture of the season, emphatically smashing the ball past the opposition keeper as his side defeated Fulham 4-0 away from home.

After a roller-coaster season plagued with problems on and off the field has finally come to a close for the £70k-per week midfielder (Source: Spotrac), he had a few things to say.

“It’s been a tough tough season for me, I’ve been down in the dumps quite a lot.” said Shelvey to NUFC TV.

“I’ve not been a nice person to be around to be fair and I owe a lot to my family. At least I finished the season with a good performance and a goal, and I’ll enjoy the summer and see what the summer brings.”

OPINION

This season in the Premier League certainly hasn’t been a walk in the park for Shelvey, and you can tell by his post-match interview on NUFC TV that this campaign has taken its toll on the midfielder. Thankfully for the 27-year old, he managed to finish the season on a high with a goal and ultimately a win for his team, and also managed to get 90 minutes under his belt in what was only his 16th league appearance in a black and white shirt for the season. Nobody seems too sure what the future holds for Shelvey, but he has shown on the final day how important he can be to Rafa Benitez’s team, while also showing that he still has the ability to score goals when called upon. Shelvey may have had a tough season this year, but it could end up being the start of a more promising future at St. James’ Park next season, should the Englishman still be at the club following the upcoming summer transfer window.
