Paul Gascoigne has described Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez as “unbelievable”.

The Spaniard guided the Magpies to safety for a second successive season, and rounded off the campaign with a resounding 4-0 over Fulham on Sunday.

And Geordie legend Gascoigne has been quick to sing his praises.

Speaking on talkSPORT, as quoted in the Chronicle, he said: “Rafa has been unbelievable.

“I’m not being funny, but Mike Ashley obviously isn’t short a few bob and they’ve got to start giving Rafa money.

“They’ve been saying it for years, but a massive club like that and an unbelievable manager like that, with what he’s achieved, you’ve got to give the guy money.”

OPINION

Gazza is a god on Tyneside, and for him to drool over Benitez like this, you know that the Spaniard is something special. The boss has done an admirable job at St. James’ Park with a relatively limited budget and a notoriously difficult owner to contend with, and he deserves all the plaudits that he gets. Obviously, the most pressing concern is getting a new deal agreed to keep him in the north east beyond the end of his current contract, and the sooner that is done, the better. Letting him leave would be unforgivable, and the Toon Army would be in world of trouble without him. There aren’t many managers who would be able to replicate his level of success with the limited means that he has been afforded, and if Rafa goes, you would have to worry for the Magpies’ chances of staying up next year. With him, however they can justifiably be looking at the top half of the table as a realistic goal. This next few weeks is vital to the immediate future of the club.
