Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign Club Brugge forward Wesley Moraes, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claim that according to their sources in Belgium, the 22-year old has been looked at on a number of occasions by the Magpies.

The 22-year old has been involved in 27 goals this season in all competitions, scoring 17 and assisting a further ten goals for the Belgian club.

The Chronicle report that the Brazilian has been linked with a move to St. James’ Park in the summer, and Moraes previously commented on potentially playing in the Premier League when reflecting on his Brugge spell.

Regarding his future, Moraes said: “I do not know yet, I have a preference for the Premier League, but we’ll see what happens, I have to give it a go.

“I’m really sad to leave, that’s why I cried.

“It’s been three years since I was in Brugge, a great club that made me grow and progress, a club with whom I discovered the Champions League and scored important goals, and now I’m going to meet a new challenge.”

OPINION

Although Moraes could be considered as being relatively unknown to the majority of the Newcastle faithful, he could be their answer to striker issues going into the summer transfer window. Rafa Benitez seems to have been having problems regarding the future of Salomon Rondon, who played his football this season on loan at St. James’ Park. At 22-year of age, it’s clear to see that Moraes has a huge future ahead of him, and there is still a lot of time for the player to grow and adapt to life in the Premier League, should the move come to fruition in the coming months. The difference here for Newcastle fans with regard to normal transfers, is the fact that the player has openly announced that he in definitely leaving Club Brugge, opening the door for a potential move to the Premier League, which Moraes has said would be his preferred location. The 22-year old has played six times for Club Brugge in the Champions League this season, scoring two goals in the process, which makes this potential move all the more attractive for fans of the club.
