Danny Mills has had his say on the reported interest shown by Tottenham in the direction of Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez.

According to CalcioNapoli24, the North London club are keen to sign the 25-year old and have tabled a bid in the region of £24.7million.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England defender had his questions surrounding Spurs’ reported interest in the Spaniard.

“I’d been stunned if Tottenham signed him,” said Mills to Football Insider.

“He has been at Newcastle for five years and had half a good season. He has hardly ripped up any trees,

“If you can get a big fee, sell him. I would go for it if I was Newcastle. He is certainly replaceable, especially if they can get decent money to invest back into the team.”

OPINION

Mills has a point about Perez, and it does seem like a fairly strange move for Spurs to make when you look back at his form this season. Of course, Mauricio Pochettino won’t be dropping Harry Kane anytime soon, so it seems they would be bringing the Spaniard in as a back-up for the England international, or just for squad depth if anything. It has to be said however that Perez’s wages are not too expensive, and his current contract with Newcastle stands at £45,000-per week (Source: Spotrac), which is very affordable even for a player sitting on the bench for the most part for a club of Spurs’ stature. However, the 25-year old has only managed 13 goals and four assists this season over 41 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions, which isn’t too shabby, but it also isn’t too impressive either. The move has the feel of a panic move for a squad rotation player going into the new season almost, and Rafa Benitez should consider the offers for the Spaniard, especially if they continue to bid for him with even higher offers.
