OPINION

It’s fair to say that Salomon Rondon has become quite popular at Newcastle United this season. The big Venezuelan has been a key part of the Magpies’ survival bid, and has provided most of the goals that have kept them in the Premier League, alongside Ayoze Perez. Realistically, it was always a toss up as to which one of those two would win the club’s player of the year award, and there will be few on Tyneside disputing Rondon being given the accolade over the Spaniard. The 29-year-old took to Twitter to celebrate his gong, and supporters were loving it. The striker has been a lethal threat in front of goal, popping up with a number of timely interventions in key matches, but has also been a key figure in the creative side of the Magpies’ game, often dropping deep and creating chances for those around him. Certainly, it is no coincidence that Perez is in the form of his life playing alongside the South American. It is obvious, therefore, why the fans want him to stay beyond the end of his loan spell from West Brom, but things are rarely as simple as fans would like them to be. The reality is that should they get promoted, the Baggies will surely want their man back, and even if they don’t, their asking price will have rocketed after a stellar campaign. Until a resolution is met, and the Toon Army can do is wait nervously.
