Newcastle mainstay Martin Dubravka has revealed his thoughts on this season’s Premier League campaign and spoke about the turning point in their season after a disappointing start.

The Slovakian stopper spoke about how his and his teammates head’s never dropped despite the poor run of form as they failed to win in their first 10 fixtures of the Premier League season.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Dubravka said: “The first 10 games was really tough for us, especially mentally, because if you don’t win in 10 games, it’s really hard to keep going.”

“A lot of people probably expected that we would keep losing the games, but after that, probably the crucial game was against Manchester City. That gave us so much confidence, and after that we had the run of victories.”

The 30-year-old has been ever present throughout the season, starting every game in goal keeping 10 clean sheets in the process, conceding 48 goals before the final game of the season against Fulham on Sunday.

Dubravka joined Newcastle in 2018 after impressing in an initial six-month loan period with Rafael Benitez paying £4million for the stopper.

OPINION

Everyone involved at Newcastle would have been expecting the worst after only just 10 games of the Premier League. After a season of consolidation after winning promotion back to the top flight, there would have been hope that this season could have been one where Newcastle kicked on under Rafael Benitez. What possibly makes this season even better is the fact that the Magpies were able to bounce back after such a disastrous start that no one expected. The win over Manchester City win will be a massive highlight and it was the last time any team beat the Premier League leaders in the league which shows the magnitude of the victory. Dubravka himself has been a revelation and an appearance on Sunday will see him have played in every single game in the campaign, if Newcastle can keep hold of their big names and add to it with pieces of investment in the summer they could certainly challenge for bigger and better things next season.
