Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has suggested the he would not be surprised if Newcastle United broke their transfer record again this summer.

Having stood since the signing of Michael Owen back in 2005, the record was finally broken with a £21 million move for Miguel Almiron in January, but Downie believes that the Magpies could go even bigger this summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports, as quoted by the Express, the journalist admitted that signing Salomon Rondon on a permanent deal remained a priority, but also laid out more plans besides.

He said: “In addition to Rondon, Newcastle are in the market for a couple of midfielders, a full-back on either side and another forward to pair with record signing Miguel Almiron.

“Do not be surprised to see Newcastle smash that £21m transfer record again this summer, but the number of arrivals will depend on outgoings.”

OPINION

This will be enough to get United fans excited. The Magpies have garnered a reputation for being somewhat stingy in the transfer market under Mike Ashley, and it’s easy to see why. The fact that their previous transfer record stood for the best part of a decade and a half should tell you all you need to know about the willingness of the owner to spend big in the transfer market. It does feel as if there is something of a sea change happening on Tyneside, however. Whether that is through choice or necessity, you decide, but the fact of the matter is, regardless of motivation and circumstance, Ashley is putting his hand in his pocket. We saw it with the signing of Almiron earlier this year, and if Downie’s forecast is anything to go by, we could be seeing it again in the very near future. That would get pulses racing on Tyneside, and will certainly fan the flames of excitement for next season.
