Newcastle United starlet Dan Barlaser is attracting the interest of Wigan Athletic and Preston North End, according to the Chronicle.

The 22-year-old midfielder spent this season on loan at Accrington Stanley to great success, and it is understood that his performances have attracted attention from the second tier.

Barlaser’s current deal at St. James’ Park expires in 2020. It is believed that the Magpies will look to extend his contract before sanctioning another loan deal for next term.

OPINION

This is really good news for both Barlaser and Newcastle. The fact that the youngster performed so well at Accrington Stanley last season can only be a good thing, and evidently his displays have been enough to convince the watching world that he is talented enough for a step up to the Championship. If he can make a go of it in the second tier, whether that be at Wigan, Preston, or elsewhere, then who’s to say that he won’t get his crack at the Premier League with his parent club? For now though, one step at a time. Let him get his contract sorted on Tyneside, ship him out for another year, and see how he gets on in one of the most competitive leagues in Europe. You wouldn’t bet against him making a real go of things, and if he does fulfil his potential, it is surely only a matter of time before he is making an impression on the senior side at Newcastle.
