Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley held no second meeting with manager Rafael Benitez on Friday, according to The Times journalist George Caulkin.

The north east football correspondent revealed the news on his personal Twitter account on Saturday, stating that the trio did indeed hold face-to-face talks in London on Thursday.

However, there have been no more in-person conversations between the Magpies powers that be since then, but Caulkin states that that was always the plan.

Instead, talks will continue via phone and email this weekend.

OPINION

This a significant updater from Caulkin. It seems as if these talks have been carefully planned and have gone professionally so far. There’s clearly a lot for the three men to discuss, so this was never going to be something that was resolved quickly. Even though they have ended their face-to-face talks for now, that doesn’t mean that the conversations regarding Benitez’s future are over. As Caulkin says, they will continue to discuss matters electronically. That’s not quite as good as being in the same room and hashing things out, but it’s a lot better than nothing. Plus, they’ve meet once for in-person talks, so that is something at least. As Caulkin says, the fact that there was no second meeting on Friday shouldn’t be a cause for concern for the Magpies faithful. Talks will carry on and it’s just a matter of time until we hear something more concrete. For now, though, this is an important update from the ever-reliable Caulkin.
