Newcastle-born Manchester United great Michael Carrick recommended Magpies midfielder Sean Longstaff to the Red Devils, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that it was the former Premier League winner who told United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take a look at the 21-year-old.

The Daily Telegraph reported earlier this week that Solskjaer’s team are preparing to make a bid for the Newcastle youngster, although the Chronicle’s report claims that an official bid has yet to be made.

Rafael Benitez’s side are determined to keep hold of Longstaff, who is tied down on a long-term contract.

OPINION

Solskjaer certainly seems to take on board what people tell him, whether it’s former teammates or staff members like Carrick. It’s no surprise that the latter has been impressed by Longstaff, with the Newcastle man perhaps reminding the United legend of himself. They’re both north east born, cultured central midfielders who broke through to the first team at a young age and made a big impression. The difference is that Longstaff happened to do it for his local team, whereas Carrick had to go to West Ham United to make the grade. However, the Red Devils first team coach is clearly keen for Longstaff to make the same move to Old Trafford as he once did. That’s why he recommended the youngster to his old club. However, it doesn’t seem as if that’s going to be happening any time soon. Newcastle are determined to keep hold of the midfielder and there’s no reason for them to sell at this stage.
