Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez will offer goalkeeper Rob Elliot up for sale again this summer, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that if the Spaniard remains in charge then he will look to offload the 33-year-old, having failed to shift him when he made him available in January.

However, the Republic of Ireland international is keen to remain at the club having settled in the North East.

Despite that, though, Benitez is determined to get rid of him and will look to do so if he stays at St James’ Park beyond this season.

OPINION

It’s time that Elliot moves on from Newcastle, isn’t it? He’s been a fine servant and he’s a decent enough ‘keeper, but his days as a first team player at Premier League level are long behind him. He’s arguably fourth choice at Newcastle these days, with Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman all ahead of him at this moment in time. With that said, it makes sense that Benitez would want to offload him this summer. He obviously tried to shift him in January but was unable to do so, but with longer to get the job done he’ll be hopeful of moving Elliot along once the season comes to an end. It’s strange that Elliot is seemingly content to remain at Newcastle despite being fourth choice. Playing regular football clearly isn’t high particularly high on his list of priorities, which could potentially make selling him a bit tricky. Still, Benitez is right to try and get rid of him this summer, that’s for sure.
