Rafael Benitez has revealed what Mike Ashley said to the players after their impressive final day victory over relegated Fulham.

Newcastle won 4-0 at Craven Cottage which saw them finish the Premier League campaign in an impressive 13th after failing to win any of their first 10 fixtures at the beginning of the season.

Benitez confirmed when speaking to the Chronicle, that owner Mike Ashley congratulated the squad: “He said congratulations to everyone.”

“We were in the dressing room, so he was talking to me and the team, saying thank you very much but nothing special.”

This will not come as a shock to many involved at the club, that Ashley didn’t have much to say after he reportedly also told the players their end of season trip to Las Vegas will no longer be going ahead.

With question marks surrounding Benitez’ future at the club, the Magpies fan’s will have been hoping for much more productive final day talks.

OPINION

Mike Ashley’s tenure at Newcastle United has been one of frustration for many involved at the club. From changing the stadium name to the consistent lack of money being put back in to transfers, Ashley hasn’t gained many fans. The news that he was in the dressing room congratulating his players and manager could be signs of positivity and that he is content with the way the season has gone. Newcastle fans would not forgive their owner if he allows hero Benitez to walk away, all because of a potential small transfer budget when they have money to spend. He is not going around things the right way if he wants to push his club into more success. Benitez’ new deal should have been on the table weeks ago with plans to look forward into the next season and beyond, and as for the Las Vegas trip, there is no surprise that Ashley has gone back on his word and disappointed everyone involved.
