European giants Roma and Marseille have both made contact with Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that both the Italian and French heavyweights approached the Magpies boss, but that Benitez told them he was focused on securing a new contract with Newcastle.

The Spaniard has been locked in discussions over his future since the season ended, with his current deal set to expire at the end of June.

Both of the aforementioned teams are on the lookout for potential new managers, with Claudio Ranieri potentially leaving the Stadio Olimpico and Rudi Garcia having announced his Marseille departure earlier this week.

OPINION

This is fantastic news for Newcastle fans. It seems that not even the lure of two pretty big European teams could convince Benitez to give up on the Magpies. He clearly sees the potential of the club and wants to help it fulfil that potential, so much so that he’s willing to pass up on potentially better situations in Italy and France. Roma, certainly, have a coterie of world class players and are regular participants in Europe and – kind of – in the Serie A title race. The fact that Benitez would rather stay at St James’ Park than move to the Italian capital says it all about how attached he is to the north east giants. Hopefully this means that he will now go and get his contract sorted as quickly as possible, although that probably rests more on owner Mike Ashley’s shoulders than his own. Still, the fact that Benitez is turning down other clubs – pretty big ones as well – can only be a good thing for the Newcastle faithful.
