Newcastle United left back Antonio Barreca has revealed that he ended up with Mohamed Salah’s shirt after his team’s defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.

The Italian, who is on loan from French heavyweights Monaco, was an unused substitute as Rafael Benitez’s side fell to a late 3-2 defeat at St James’ Park.

However, the 24-year-old’s lack of action didn’t stop him from nabbing the Egyptian’s shirt, as he revealed in a post on his story on his personal Instagram account.

Barreca’s gloating is unlikely to go down well with the Toon Army considering he has played just four minutes of action since his temporary arrival in January.

OPINION

Yeah, this probably isn’t the smartest move from Barreca. It’s one thing when players who actually featured in games swap shirts at the end of a frantic encounter like Saturday’s. However, it’s a far different story when an unused substitute, who played no part in the game, seeks out an opposition player with the sole purpose of bagging their shirt. When you’re someone like Barreca who has barely played for his team then it looks even worse. For him to then post about it on his Instagram story, gloating about it, is just plain stupid. There will be plenty of Newcastle supporters who follow him and won’t have been in the least bit impressed by his antics. This isn’t the sort of thing you can get away with when you’ve played just four minutes of action since joining. Barreca surely wasn’t looking to antagonise anyone or anything like that, but he might want to think twice in future before repeating this sort of post.
