Many Newcastle United fans didn’t waste time delivering a verdict on Javier Manquillo’s first-half display against Leicester City on Friday, and hopefully their feedback doesn’t get back to him, as it was rather harsh. One fan dubbed the 24-year-old right-back the worst footballer in England while another simply questioned how the Spaniard played football for a living. These harsh words seemed to come Manquillo’s way quite quickly in the first-half as he just seemed unable to control the ball when it fell at his feet. Given that the 24-year-old doesn’t get regular football under Rafa Benitez at St James Park, you feel fans shouldn’t have been so quick to pounce on his early errors and maybe should have held off ripping the player apart. This is because as the half went on he did seem more relaxed when the ball come to him, so maybe in the second-half he will continue to improve. Benitez opted to give Manquillo the nod when it come to his starting line-up on Friday likely because of DeAndre Yedlin’s mistake against Crystal Palace, and it’ll be interesting to see if the 24-year-old can convince his manager and the frustrated fans below that he deserves to keep his starting spot. However it might help that the Magpies went into the break with a 1-0 lead over the Foxes.
