Many Newcastle United fans will be thrilled with Jamie Carragher’s verdict on the upcoming clash against Liverpool as he thinks Rafa Benitez’s side will earn a draw.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that he was expecting the Reds to drop points against the Magpies for a couple of reasons.

“There’s two reasons really (why Liverpool will drop points against Newcastle),” said Carragher on Monday Night Football (Monday, April 8th, 19:34).

“I think Liverpool will get to the Champions League semi-final and I think Newcastle will be in between two games between Barcelona or two games against Manchester United.

“Then I think due to Rafa Benitez as a manager, the way he sets his team up, I think he will make it difficult for Liverpool.

“People will say he’s an ex-Liverpool manager who will like to see Liverpool win the league but I’m not sure really.

“I think if he won the league himself then it’d be okay for Jurgen, but he might be thinking I don’t want Jurgen to do something I haven’t done maybe.

“But I don’t think they’ll be any favours given, the way he sets up tactically, he’ll play five at the back and make it a difficult game.”

Magpies supporters will love the idea of taking points off Liverpool as the Reds have been in tremendous form this season so it would be some feat, they’d also love the fact Carragher gives Benitez the praise he deserves.

The pundit cites the manager’s tactics as a reason why the Magpies are capable of causing the Reds’ potential heartbreak in the race for the Premier League title, and that’s a far cry from how it was earlier in the season.

When Benitez set his side up defensively against the so-called perceived bigger teams in the division earlier in the campaign, pundits left, right and centre tore him apart for not playing attacking football.

However with the Magpies still in the relegation battle as it stands, even if they’re close to being officially safe, Benitez has proven to be justified in trying to grind out results.

While Magpies fans appreciate attractive football, they’ll happily cheer Benitez grinding out an impressive point from a clash with the Reds so they will no doubt be over-the-moon that Carragher essentially fears his former side facing them.
