Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has shared he is hoping to be ready for pre-season after recovering from a knee injury suffered earlier this season.

The 21-year old hopes to be available for selection as the Magpies travel to China to compete in the Premier League’s Asian Trophy.

Longstaff provided an injury update on himself by revealing he might have a chance of returning in time to feature during pre-season.

Speaking to The Chronicle, Longstaff said: “You want to get back on the pitch as much as possible.

“I got a little taste of it, playing for a couple of months, and then it got taken away so quickly, but now I want to try and get back fit as quickly as possible.

“It’ll give me a chance to get back in pre-season and hopefully try and work as hard as I can to be around the team again and see if I can get back playing some games.”

OPINION

Newcastle fans should be overjoyed after this injury update, especially after Longstaff was gradually beginning to break into the first team before his unfortunate injury. At 21 years old, Longstaff is one of Newcastle’s best up and coming midfielders, so it’s obviously a positive sign that he should be back and available for selection ahead of United’s pre-season tour to China. Considering the midfielder was playing his football on loan at Blackpool until the start of this season, his development has been incredible, as in the space of a year he has grown from a youth player to a midfielder playing in the first team for Newcastle. Hopefully, Longstaff’s recovery will continue to be successful, and the 21-year old will be back in contention for game time at St. James’ Park ahead of the start of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign. However in the meantime, the midfielder will be looking to start slowly in China, and get as much game time as possible in the Magpies’ pre-season campaign.
