Jamie Carragher heaped praise on Salomon Rondon during Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Leicester City on Friday.

The Sky Sports pundit raved about the job the Venezuelan forward had done for the Magpies while on loan from West Bromwich Albion this season, and added that he was now an essential member of Rafa Benitez’s side.

Carragher then shared he believes it wasn’t a question of whether the Magpies should sign Rondon as he revealed he believes they needed to act to get a deal done with West Brom.

“Rondon at the top of the pitch, has a thankless task certainly away from home, I mean what a job he has done for Newcastle,” said Carragher on commentary during Newcastle’s clash with Leicester (20:18, Friday April 12th, Sky Sports Premier League).

“He has been essential, he’s still on loan…will they make it a permanent deal? I think they have to do.”

OPINION

Rondon may not have scored against the Foxes but it was still a decent performance by the forward. The 29-year-old went close to scoring with a fantastic free-kick in the first-half and it was that moment that saw the game turn in his side’s favour. It seem that Rondon’s effort didn’t only rattle the post but rattled Leicester City players as they lost all momentum in the match from that moment. As for Carragher’s remarks, he is spot-on to claim that the Magpies simply have to get a deal done. Benitez’s side were screaming out for a clinical forward last season and Rondon has proven to be capable of scoring the goals for the Magpies. The 29-year-old has 10 goals in 30 outings this season and you feel he’d be able to build on that total next season. With West Brom not looking certain to win promotion from the Championship this season, then the Magpies should be able to get a deal done with them for Rondon, as long as Mike Ashley opens his wallet just a little bit.
