Young midfielder Thomas Midgely has headed to Newcastle United for a trial, according to the Mag.

The reliable Newcastle news website has claimed that Midgely, 16, has been released by Manchester City and has already made his first appearance for the Magpies’ Under-18s side when he played in the 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Midgley is naturally a midfielder, but made his four U18 Premier League appearances for Man City this season at left-back.

OPINION

Midgley was only 15-years-old when he played for Man City’s Under-18s in their win against Newcastle’s Under-18s at the start of this season. He played for a team that won 6-0 that day and might not have guessed that he would be heading to the Tyneside club ahead of this summer’s transfer window after that mauling. Midgley seems like a decent young player, but you have to wonder why he was released by Manchester City if he was getting into their Under-18s side at such a young age. He only played four times for them in the U18s Premier League this season, and all of them saw him play at left-back, which is not his natural position. Man City’s youth staff must have seen something from the youngster that did not sit right with them, however their loss could be Newcastle’s gain. Midgley might not sign for the Magpies because he is after all only on trial, but it is nice to see that the club is showing signs of interest in young English players who can strengthen their youth options.
