Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez will be understandably keen to add to his squad this summer, and with his desire to sign striker Salomon Rondon not quite reciprocated by the board, an attacker will surely be a priority for the Magpies.

It came as no surprise, then, when TEAMtalk reported in February that Benitez’s side were one of the teams tracking Birmingham City forward Che Adams ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, things became more complicated on Wednesday when the Daily Mail claimed that Southampton are preparing a £15million bid for the player, with Burnley and Norwich City set to provide the Saints with stiff competition for his signature.

When you combine the number of teams linked with Adams by TEAMtalk and the Mail, you come up with a total of eight. Alongside Newcastle, Southampton, Burnley and Norwich, TEAMtalk stressed that Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace are all monitoring the youngster.

The 22-year-old has struck 22 times for Garry Monk’s side this campaign, which is what all the fuss is about. His talent combined with his youth makes him an enticing prospect for any top flight side.

The Magpies are obviously sniffing around the Birmingham star, but with so many teams in the hunt Newcastle’s pursuit of Adams is surely doomed to fail.

Under Mike Ashley’s tyrannical stewardship the North East giants simply don’t have the financial muscle or the pulling power to beat out Premier League teams who are historically smaller clubs than Newcastle.

That’s sad to say and it must be incredibly frustrating for followers of the Magpies, but that’s simply the reality of where they are at the moment. They’d struggle to beat out Southampton and Bournemouth for Adams, let alone Spurs and Everton.

Adams would be a phenomenal signing for Newcastle this summer. However, it doesn’t look like the club are going to have any chance of bringing him in.
