Newcastle United will undoubtedly need to bring in a few fresh faces this summer, and with the future of loan star Salomon Rondon uncertain at best, attack will likely be an area the club targets.

It’s no surprise then to see the club linked with a summer move for Arsenal man Danny Welbeck. The Daily Mirror reported on Friday that the Magpies – as well as Everton and West Ham United – are monitoring the Englishman’s status ahead of a potential summer move.

However, the concerning aspect of the Mirror’s report was that they claimed that the Gunners are considering offering Welbeck a new contract despite him missing the majority of the season with a long term injury.

If that happens then it would obviously end the Magpies’ chances of signing the player. Even the fact that Arsenal are considering doing such a thing makes it appear as if this potential Newcastle summer signing is slipping away. That’s gutting news for Newcastle supporters.

The 28-year-old would be a tremendous signing for Rafael Benitez’s side on a free contract. He’s a versatile, underrated attacker who would probably fit in very well with the Spaniard’s system.

Benitez likes his attackers to work hard and bring others into play, as well as score goals obviously, and those are things that Welbeck excels at. He’s not a blindingly prolific centre forward, but he’s someone who has never really had the opportunity to be the main man for Manchester United or Arsenal.

He would certainly be the central figure up front were he to join Newcastle. Everything would go through him and he would likely flourish as a result.

However, that may all be a distant dream for Magpies supporters at this point. If Arsenal do tie Welbeck down then Newcastle will have to kiss a promising potential signing goodbye, as their pursuit will be up in smoke.
