OPINION

On loan Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon has gone on leaps and bounds for the club this season, and to say that he has been a vital asset in their quest for Premier League survival would be quite the understatement.

He has no doubt won over the hearts of Newcastle fans who doubted his signing in the summer, and now they likely cannot envision life without the 29-year-old on Tyneside.

A permanent transfer from West Brom has been touted a lot and it remains to be seen whether Newcastle will secure a deal, but it is no surprise that their league rivals have been caught sniffing around him.

According to the Chronicle, that club is Wolves. The report claims that they tried to negotiate a permanent transfer for the Venezuelan international in January if there was any room for movement on the loan deal agreed between Newcastle and the Baggies.

Well, the fans will be jumping for joy after the report revealed that United’s deal was “water tight” with the Championship outfit. They add that it is not known whether Wolves will still be interested this summer, but it is certainly a relief for the fans that he was not prised away a few months ago.

It would have been quite the predicament if Rondon had left at that point. There would not have been a lot of time for Newcastle to find a suitable replacement, and it would have been likely that they would have secured a last minute loan deal for a relatively unknown forward.

Thank goodness this was not the case for United. Rondon has been a key member of the team this season, and he will continue to be for the last stretch of the campaign.

One thing is for sure, all Newcastle fans will be delighted after hearing that a move failed to materialise for the star striker.
