Former Newcastle United defender Peter Ramage has claimed that Magpies starlet Sean Longstaff is going to be an ‘absolute sensation’.

The 21-year-old excelled for Rafael Benitez’s side after coming into the team at the turn of the year, before his progress was cruelly halted by injury.

However, Ramage believes the future is bright for him: “When I went back and was training, Sean was training with the under-23s and he is just a talent,” he told The Chronicle. “He is going to be an absolute sensation and he is not the only one.

“Rafa is brilliant in trusting him and then Sean himself has had the confidence to go out there and perform against these superstars the way he has. It is no wonder he is being talked about for England call-ups and the big boys are starting to look at him.”

OPINION

Ramage is absolutely spot on, here. Longstaff has stolen the hearts of Magpies’ supporters and he is very much looked upon as the future of the football club at this point. It’s no surprise, too, considering how well he was playing before he went down with injury. He was performing superbly, rarely having a bad game, and had established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet for Benitez. Ramage is right, he’s going to be a sensation. He has so much potential it’s frightening. The big problem, as Ramage alludes to, will be keeping him at the club. The Premier League’s big boys have already begun to sniff around the youngster and if one of them comes in for him it’s going to be very difficult for the club to keep him at St James’ Park. However, all the fans can do at the moment is hope that he makes a full recovery from injury and then enjoy him while they can.
