Ex-Newcastle Striker Mick Quinn has praised Salomon Rondon and the ‘massive influence’ he has had on the Newcastle squad.

The Striker, currently on-loan from West Brom, has been heralded for his performances this season and there are many who have singled out the significance of securing his permanent signature.

Quinn, writing in his Chronicle column, commented on the impact the Venezuelan forward has had on his attacking team-mates, saying: “He’s a top player to hold the ball up and I think Newcastle have the right blend doing it like that.’

“When it comes to signings, you’ve got to judge the individual on its merits. Salomon Rondon has been involved in 43% of Newcastle goals this season – scoring or assisting – and you have to judge him on the influence he’s having on the team and it’s a massive influence.”

The blend of Rondon with the talent of forwards such as Ayoze Perez and Miguel Almiron has seen the Magpies confirm their spot in the Premier League next season.

OPINION

Salomon Rondon has recently taken a back seat in goal scoring terms as Ayoze Perez has scored frequently in the last couple of weeks. Rondon’s unselfishness has come to the forefront during this time, his none stop work rate has been incredible with the urge for him to press the ball high and work the channels when off the ball. His work on the ball is equally impressive, his ability to hold up the ball has brought Perez and Almiron into games in a great manner for the Magpies and their work off the back of Rondon’s tough work has pushed Newcastle up the Premier League table. Rafael Benitez should demand that Rondon should be his first permanent signature in the summer and will also be the vocal point to build his team around. With Rondon in front of Almiron and Perez, that front three will frighten many Premier League defences. The only added concern is the options to replace Rondon should he need a rest, options are slim and another forward is definitely need for Rondon to perform to his optimum level next season.
