Newcastle United have approached Hoffenheim with enquiries about centre-forward Joelinton, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies have been in contact with the German club about their “highly-rated” striker, who is valued at £45million.

It is understood that interest from across Europe is growing in the 22-year-old Brazilian, but Newcastle are ready to pay a “decent fee” for a striker in the summer transfer window, as long as they have the potential to make a profit on him in the future.

OPINION

Joelinton has enjoyed a very good season at Hoffenheim. He has scored 11 goals and supplied nine assists in 33 appearances across all competitions for the side that currently sits ninth in the Bundesliga standings. Finding the back of the net in every one of three games is a very good return for the 22-year-old, but this is his first season in what many would class as a top European league, and spending £45million on him could be a massive mistake by Newcastle, who spent £20million on Miguel Almiron in January to break their transfer record. It is unlikely that Mike Ashley would allow Rafa Benitez, or whoever is in charge in the summer, to more than double the club’s new record on a player who there are still going to be doubts about. Yes Joelinton is in good form in a strong league and is still quite young. However he has to show more consistency in order to be worth what Hoffenheim want for him.
