OPINION

A report from the Daily Mail on Thursday claimed that the Newcastle United board want Rafael Benitez to remain as manager and are willing to offer him a £50million transfer kitty plus whatever he makes through player sales this summer. The reaction from the Magpies faithful has been pretty negative to say the least. They either doubt that Benitez will get that much to spend or are simply unimpressed with that total in this day and age. To be fair to them, £50million isn’t much money for a Premier League side to spend in one transfer window. The likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham and West Ham United all breezed past that total last summer, so it’s not as if Benitez would be receiving a transfer war chest. However, in comparison to his previous summers under Mike Ashley, this is a big step in the right direction. Obviously the anti-Ashley fans are never going to see it that way and rightfully so, but you can see both sides really. Still, £50million is nowhere near what Benitez needs to fulfil his ambitions for the club.
