OPINION

Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon produced a masterclass of centre forward play in his team’s 3-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday. It’s clear that he fits absolutely perfectly into this Magpies team and is ideally suited to how manager Rafael Benitez wants his team to play. The 29-year-old was instrumental to everything the home side did well against St James’ Park, particularly for Ayoze Perez’s second goal. It was the burly Venezuelan, not the most mobile of players, who broke free down the left hand side of the pitch and produced a sensational cross to put the ball on a plate for Perez to convert. The two players have an innate understanding and that shone through against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. The visitors simply couldn’t cope with either man, with the pair possessing the full gamut of qualities that make life hell for opposition defenders. Rondon has excellent strength, power and hold up play, while Perez is bang in form thanks to his mixture of finishing ability, pace and trickery. The two certainly excelled against the Saints, that’s for sure.
