OPINION

Newcastle United confirmed via their official Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon that Mike Dean would be taking charge of their upcoming fixture against Brighton on Saturday night – and it has not gone down well with the Toon Army on Twitter. Rafael Benitez has had many altercations with the official, with Dean angering the Spaniard on two separate occasions this season. Benitez was enraged after the 2-1 defeat against Wolves, after DeAndre Yedlin was sent off even though Jamaal Lascelles was covering his team mate. Another moment that did not sit well with the Newcastle manager was Dean’s decision to award Bournemouth a penalty even though his striker Salomon Rondon was given the exact same rough treatment in the opposition penalty area. Both decisions led to the Magpies only collecting one point from a possible six in the League and the decisions led to Benitez calling for VAR. Fans of Newcastle shared the dismay shown by their Manager previously when the news broke that Mike Dean was officiating their next game. One fan tweeted: ‘it has to be his last season @FA’.
