Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has named Magpies duo Paul Dummett and Ayoze Perez in his Premier League Team of the Week.

The top flight’s all-time leading goalscorer revealed the news on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday, rewarding the pair for their efforts in Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday.

Perez stole the headlines as he blew Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side away with his first ever hat-trick for the Magpies, while Dummett was integral in keeping the Saints out after Mario Lemina’s second half strike got them back into the game.

The two Newcastle stars were joined in Shearer’s eleven by the likes of Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson and Everton trio Seamus Coleman, Lucas Digne and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

OPINION

There are hardly two Premier League players who are more deserving of a place in Shearer’s Team of the Week than Dummett and Perez. The duo were absolutely crucial to Newcastle’s stunning victory over Southampton, excelling at opposite ends of the pitch but both just as important as each other. Perez is obviously the headline act after scoring that magnificent hat-trick, and rightly so, but Dummett’s contributions shouldn’t be forgotten either. The Welsh international was far and away the best Magpies defender as he almost singlehandedly-at-times kept the visitors out at St James’ Park. He’s a player who often gets overlooked, probably because of his homegrown status and less than spectacular style. However, he has really come into his own since Florian Lejeune went down injured, establishing himself as the undisputed starter on the left hand side of the defence. Not much more needs to be said about Perez, on the other hand, he was simply tremendous on Saturday.
