Newcastle United have tabled a cut price offer to Roma for striker Edin Dzeko, according to Tutto Mercato Web.

The Italian news outlet claim that the Magpies are joined by Premier League rivals West Ham in making an initial bid of around £8.5million (€10million) for the giant Bosnian international, despite the Italian giants looking for £21million (€25million) for his capture this summer.

The 33-year-old stands just short of 6’4″ tall [Transfermarkt] and has scored 12 goals in 31 appearances this season, while he has 50 Premier League strikes to his name during his time with Manchester City.

Opinion

You can tell that the silly season of the transfer window is just around the corner with speculation like this. Newcastle might be looking for bargains to snap up as well as Premier League experience but there are so many things about this proposed deal that just do not make sense. At 33-years-old Dzeko is some way out of the parameters Newcastle look for in their signings – namely future sell on value – and you can be sure his wages would blow the current top earner at St James’ Park out of the water. Yes, the Magpies might need a striker and a cut price deal for anyone of Dzeko’s quality and experience would be welcomed by the fans but it is just not going to happen. After all, they could snap up Salomon Rondon – a man proven to have what it takes to lead the line on Tyneside – this summer and at a couple of years younger than Dzeko will be seen as a better deal for the club.
