Michael Owen has predicted that Newcastle United will be resigned to a point when they take on Southampton when the two sides face off at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The former Magpies forward shared that he thought that United would find it difficult against a “progressive” Saints side, but predicted that they would share the spoils with the South Coast outfit.

Newcastle come off the back of a crucial 1-0 win over Leicester last Friday, while Southampton were as equally impressive in their 3-1 win over Wolves as well.

“Southampton have won four of their last six PL games but will probably think they need one more win before they can consider themselves safe from the drop. Eight wins from 18 games shows what a good job Ralph Hasenhuttl has done since he took charge at St Mary’s,” he said in his Bet Victor blog.

“United picked up a very good three points at the King Power Stadium last Friday and they have won five of their last six home games at St James’ Park. I feel they may have to settle for a point against this progressive Saints’ side.”

OPINION

Owen is absolutely spot on here, Newcastle may have to resign to just a point against the Saints. Winning 3-1 against Wolves is quite the achievement after the form that they have been in recently, and what makes it even more impressive is that they are a team threatened with the possibility of relegation at the moment. Newcastle no doubt thought that they were safe after their recent victory, but Cardiff winning against Brighton at the Amex on Tuesday means that they need to get at least another three points on the board in order to be completely assured of their safety. However, it is hard to separate these two teams based on quality, so it would not be surprising if this was quite a low scoring affair. Newcastle will find it hard against a team who have recently found their form, so they cannot afford to be off the boil for this one.
