Newcastle United could spend up to £75million on a striker in the summer transfer window, according to Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder.

The reporter was asked in a Q&A session via the Chronicle’s website on Wednesday [01:45pm] if he can see the Magpies spending a record sum on a centre-forward in the summer after Rafa Benitez said, as quoted by the Mirror, that “you have to spend £40m, £50m, £75m” to improve his attack.

Ryder claims that it is a “possibility” for Newcastle to splash that much cash, while adding that a “marquee” signing is achievable for the Tyneside club.

OPINION

It would be the biggest shock of the year if Mike Ashley was to spend £75million on several players, let alone one centre-forward. Newcastle are going to need to sign one or two new strikers in the summer as Salomon Rondon’s loan deal expires at the end of the season and there are serious doubts about the quality of Joselu and Yoshinori Muto. Ideally Benitez – or whoever is in charge – needs to replace both of them and it would also be nice to sign Rondon permanently, which could cost around £16million is reports about his release clause are to be believed. That is as much as fans should probably expect Ashley to spend on a striker. If he can sign Rondon for that much after a solid season by the West Brom loanee, then why would be spend more? It’s going to be a very frustrating transfer window for Newcastle fans, especially if Miguel Almiron’s form doesn’t improve. He has been quiet lately and Ashley might think twice about splashing the cash if the club’s record signing doesn’t adapt to the Premier League soon.
