Newcastle United left back Achraf Lazaar has confirmed that he is in talks with loan club Sheffield Wednesday about extending his stay in Yorkshire.

The 27-year-old hasn’t featured for the Magpies for some time now and was allowed to join the Championship outfit on a six month loan in January.

Now, it appears he might be set for a permanent summer exit: “Sheffield Wednesday would like to keep me, we’re talking about it,” he said, as per The Chronicle’s news and transfer centre [24/04; 12:07].

“I have a two-year contract with Newcastle, we’ll see,” he finished.

OPINION

It beggars belief that Lazaar still has two years remaining on his Newcastle contract. The man has been a complete flop with the Magpies and his signing is up there as one of the most baffling in recent memory. Injuries have limited him to just three appearances since he joined Wednesday, but he’s clearly doing something right. Somehow he’s done enough to convince them that he’s worth signing permanently, because according to him they are in talks to do just that. To be fair, manager Steve Bruce has spoken glowingly about both him and fellow Newcastle loanee Rolando Aarons at every possible opportunity. They both have enough quality to make an impact in the Championship, while not being quite good enough to do that at Premier League level. With that said, it would make sense for Lazaar to move on this summer. His Newcastle career isn’t going anywhere, so if the club can get him off the books then happy days.
