Jorge Jesus would love the chance to manage Newcastle United if the opportunity came up, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports on their website that the former Benfica boss – who won three Liga NOS titles during his time there, as well as two trophies while in charge of Sporting CP – would jump at the chance to take charge of the Magpies, as he is keen to get started at a club in the Premier League.

The report adds that the people around the 64-year-old in Portugal are trying to play down his ambitions to become a manager in the top-flight, despite the fact that he has not worked in one of the big leagues in Europe yet.

OPINION

There are going to be stories about the managerial position at Newcastle regularly, but Jesus should not get his hopes up at the moment. The likelihood of Rafa Benitez staying at the club is high now, and to be honest, he probably wants to stay put. The club’s board no doubt want him to stay, so Jesus would be out of luck when it comes to potentially taking charge of Newcastle. There is no denying that he is not a good manager, although you do have to consider that he has not managed in any of Europe’s top leagues. If he wants a job in the Premier League, this is not going to stand him in good stead in the slightest – so he may have to wait a while before he realises his ambition. That ambition, though, does not look like it is going to happen at Newcastle any time soon – something which would be much to his disappointment.
