Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has left the door open over a summer exit to current loan side West Brom when his temporary deal comes to an end.

The English hitman joined the Baggies on a season-long deal in the summer of 2018 in a switch which saw Salomon Rondon head to St James’ Park.

Having taken his tally to 21 goals for the season with his hat trick against Preston North End, Gayle said he had enjoyed the campaign but that it was still unclear what would happen over the summer, admitting he would happily continue playing for the club.

When probed about whether he would like to return to the Hawthorns, he told the Express and Star: “Yes, of course. I’ve really enjoyed the season and the fans have taken to me and showed great support. In the summer, I’m going to see what happens but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here.”

Opinion

Gayle has once again flourished in the Championship and after a couple of years trying to prove he is a Premier League hitman, he has perhaps shown his true colours and level of ability. Newcastle would no doubt love to use the striker as a bargaining chip in trying to lower the price for Salomon Rondon, who himself has excelled during his temporary spell at St James’ Park. The attacking duo seem tailor made for their respective loan sides and it would be a huge shame not to see them continue their careers where they are appreciated because of money. However, the unfortunate truth is that finances are what makes football what it is today and there will not be any deal done if the numbers are not right for all parties involved. Gayle seems keen on returning but whether the Baggies are as open to it remains to be seen. Yes, he has scored a lot this season but if West Brom are playing Premier League football next season, is he really the man to lead the line again?
