Everton could be interested in hiring Rafa Benitez next season if the Spaniard decides to quit Newcastle United, according to Mirror reporter Darren Lewis.

The reliable journalist has claimed that even though Benitez is a Liverpool legend, Goodison Park is a potential destination for him if Marco Silva fails to impress at the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

“I think he can go to any club outside of the top six, possibly even a couple of clubs within the top six,” Lewis told talkSPORT, as quoted by the Chronicle.

“[Everton?] I think if Silva doesn’t start well, they could look at him. I know he’s been at Liverpool, but I think they’re a big club with money.”

Benitez’s current deal at St James’ Park is set to expire in the summer, which could lead to a lot of speculation about the Spaniard’s future in the coming weeks if he doesn’t reach a new agreement.

OPINION

Everton have a lot of money, they are a top-half Premier League club with big aspirations and they are not ran by someone as universally hated by fans as Mike Ashley. However the board at Goodison Park is likely to show faith in Silva over the next year or two because they have chopped and changed managers at will in the last couple of seasons. No one has found a rhythm at Goodison since David Moyes left, and surely they will want some stability and give Silva the chance to build a side that is capable of putting pressure on the Premier League’s top-six. Everton are admittedly in a position that Newcastle should be in. They are two of the biggest teams outside the Premier League’s elite and the Magpies, given their resources, should be higher up. It’s not Benitez’s fault their in this position and many fans would sympathise with the ex-Liverpool boss if he does leave in the summer. It seems unlikely that a chance would arise at Everton though but if Silva was axed, Benitez might be a good replacement.
