Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez would “dearly love” to manage former club Liverpool again in the future, according to The Chronicle’s Mark Douglas.

The reliable journalist claims that the Merseyside giants still hold a very special place in the Spaniard’s heart, despite his exit almost nine years ago.

The area is his adopted home and, of course, the Reds are the first English team he really connected with. Douglas states that Benitez loves the Magpies, but that Liverpool will always be in the back of his mind.

However, the chances of the Newcastle chief returning to Anfield any time soon appear to be pretty remote at this moment in time.

OPINION

This isn’t massively surprising, in all honesty. Benitez spent a long time at Liverpool and had some phenomenal times over there. He authored arguably the most famous night in the club’s history and one of the greatest footballing moments of all time with the 2005 Champions League final victory over AC Milan. For that alone he will always be fondly remembered at Anfield. However, both Benitez and Liverpool have long since moved on. Rafa seems to have the same sort of feelings for Newcastle as he has for the Reds, and he will be thinking of nothing else but his team down the stretch this season. Liverpool, too, have no time to dwell on a future Rafa reunion. They are excelling under Jurgen Klopp and in the midst of a Premier League title race, so Newcastle supporters shouldn’t worry too much about Benitez’s wish to manage his old team again.
