Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is seeking a meeting with Magpies managing director Lee Charnley this week, according to The Telegraph.

The newspaper claims that the Spaniard wants to receive the answers he needs from Charnley in order to proceed with his plans for summer recruitment.

The Newcastle boss is said to want to improve his defence, midfield and attack, with transfer targets already prevalent in his mind. Whether he will get the go ahead to make the moves he wants remains to be seen.

The Telegraph’s report states that if Charnley can assure Benitez that the club will secure his targets early then there will be little reason for the manager to leave at the end of the season.

OPINION

It’s no surprise that Benitez wants to sit down with Charnley and hash out where the land lies ahead of what will be a pivotal summer for the club. Now that Newcastle’s Premier League safety has been assured it makes perfect sense for the manager to want to enter further talks this week. It’s over to Charnley now, but you would think that there should be no bigger priority in his mind than securing the future of the club’s world class manager. Benitez will want assurances about how the club will proceed in the transfer market this summer, because he believes that if he’s given the resources he can awaken the sleeping giant that Newcastle are. It will come down to whether Charnley can give him the assurances he needs, and that is very much doubtful at this moment in time. However, if the two men can get in a room this week that will at least be a big step in the right direction.
