Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez could sign a one year extension to his current contract, according to The Sun.

The newspaper claims that the Spaniard and the Magpies board are in agreement that a one year stopgap deal could be a temporary solution to their ongoing contract dispute.

At present Benitez is out of contract at the end of June and is awaiting answers from managing director Lee Charnley after submitting a list of demands at the board’s request.

The former Liverpool boss is thought to want more freedom in the transfer market, as well as some investment in the club’s training ground.

OPINION

This is an interesting update. It’s kind of surprising that Benitez would be open to signing a one year deal, seeing as it would only provide a temporary solution to the fundamental issues he and the club have. They would have to have the same contract discussions they’re having now in another year’s time, it doesn’t make any sense. However, for the supporters this would probably be a perfectly acceptable resolution, certainly preferable to Benitez leaving this summer anyway. Obviously they would prefer for him to ink a long term deal and stay on Tyneside for the foreseeable future, but this is better than nothing. This just seems like a very Newcastle thing to do, though. They can’t actually work out a solution so instead they’ve decided to simply delay some more. That’s not the way a well-run club works, is it? Still, if it keeps Benitez at St James’ Park then it’s better than nothing.
