Antonio Barreca has taken to Instagram to ask Newcastle United if they have forgotten that he plays for them.

Rafa Benitez signed Barreca, 24, on loan from Monaco in the January transfer window, but he has not featured in any of the Magpies’ last seven matchday squads.

The Italian left-back made his debut with a four-minute cameo off the bench against Tottenham on February 2, but since then he has not been seen.

Barreca has now addressed his lack of game-time via his personal Instagram account.

He said: “Newcastle, I’m here too! Have you forgotten⁉️”

OPINION

Some Newcastle fans might want to see Barreca feature more regularly after Matt Ritchie’s poor performance as the left-sided wing-back against Arsenal on Monday, but Benitez is unlikely to be too happy with the Italian speaking out like this on social media. Barreca has not done anything to prove that he is good enough for the Magpies yet, and although fans have not seen much of him, Benitez will have seen more than enough of him in training. If Benitez doesn’t believe he’s good enough then fair enough, and while his Instagram post could be a bit contentious for some, it at least shows the Monaco loanee is eager to play. Don’t expect Barreca to play any time soon though. His appearance against Tottenham might be all we see of him unless there are one or two injuries in the first team. Until then, Barreca seems as though he will remain frozen out.
