The signing of Miguel Almiron in January was definitely the turning point that the Newcastle United fans had been looking for.

They were fed up of their club under performing in almost every single window under owner Mike Ashley, but the arrival of the Paraguayan playmaker a few months ago would have got everyone optimistic once again – he was just the type of player that they had been crying out for.

They would have been devastated to witness Almiron getting injured in the 3-1 win over Southampton last weekend then – the 25-year-old had been yet to score his first goal for the club before the setback.

However, this means that players who have been out of the side recently can take advantage of such a situation. In this case, it should be Christian Atsu, who has been sitting on the bench because of Almiron’s excellence.

Atsu – who was signed in 2016 from Chelsea – is the perfect player to capitalise on Almiron’s injury. If he is ruled out for the rest of the season, then Atsu must make the most of the opportunity that is likely to come his way.

He is often a player who can blow hot and cold for the Magpies, and that is obviously a reason why he has been left out of the team recently. Nevertheless, he can stake his claim for a first team spot if Rafa Benitez decides that he is the best fit.

The likelihood of Almiron making the clash against Brighton this Saturday must be very slim, and this should be the first match where he can try and impress the manager.

Potentially losing Almiron to the sidelines will obviously leave many fans gutted, and rightly so – he is one of the players who has really brought the best out of Ayoze Perez.

However, Benitez must unshackle Atsu against the Seagulls, as he is their best option.
