Popular pundit Ian Wright has expressed his disappointment at Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff being ruled out for the rest of the season.

He says that he is “gutted” that the 21-year-old has not been able to build upon the performances that have seen him excel in a Newcastle shirt recently, admitting that the news about his absence was “terrible to read.”

Longstaff has suffered knee ligament damage after a challenge on West Ham midfielder Robert Snodgrass in the 2-0 loss to the Hammers on Saturday, where he left the London Stadium on crutches.

“That’s terrible to read.. no doubt he’ll be back stronger. Gutted for him,” he said on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Many pundits like Wright have been waxing lyrical about the displays of Longstaff recently, so it is no surprise that Wright is disappointed that he has been ruled out for the rest of the season. He was no doubt on the brink of a call-up to England after some of his performances were watched by Gareth Southgate, but this has now all been put to bed after Saturday. The young ace had begun to hit his stride and he has no doubt been one of the team’s best players after a strong few months. The Magpies will certainly miss his presence on the field, so here is hoping that they are able to replace him with someone who is able to fill the void well. This will be a huge test for Newcastle in how they are able to cope without him – so let’s wait and see how they do.
