Ian Wright has predicted that Newcastle United will avoid relegation, claiming that he couldn’t handle Match of the Day colleague Alan Shearer’s tears if they were to suffer the drop.

The Magpies are currently 14th in the Premier League table, six points clear of the relegation zone, and Wright believes that the gap they have built up will be enough.

Speaking on Radio 5 Live, as quoted in the Chronicle, he said: “I think Newcastle are going to be alright.

“I wouldn’t want to see Newcastle go down, to be honest, because I couldn’t take Shearer’s tears.”

OPINION

Wright by name, probably right by nature. After a dreadful start to the season, you would have been forgiven for assuming that Newcastle were set for a full on relegation battle this season, and to be fair, for a while it looked like they might just get one. Over the past few weeks, however, the Toon Army have begun to look like a really decent set up, and with Miguel Almiron now pulling the strings in the final third and a back three seemingly settled on as their shape of choice, the general demeanour surrounding the squad is one of positivity and progression. Whether that keeps up next season remains to be seen, but right now, things are looking brighter than they have done for some time on Tyneside. You would expect Newcastle to stay up, and you would probably expect them to do it at something of a canter .
