West Bromwich Albion are thought to be keen to sign Newcastle United’s on-loan striker Dwight Gayle this summer if they achieve promotion, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The newspaper claims that the 28-year-old has been one of West Brom’s standout performers this season and as such they would be interested in bringing him back on a permanent basis if they end up securing promotion to the Premier League.

However, a decision will only be made on the Englishman’s future once Darren Moore’s side know what division they will be playing in next time round.

Gayle has excelled yet again in the Championship this term, bagging 16 goals and seven assists in 29 games in all competitions.

OPINION

This comes as no surprise, really. Gayle has been excellent once again in the Championship, as he always is, but he never seems to have quite the same level of success at Premier League level. You can understand, though, why West Brom would want to bring him in next year regardless of his spotty top flight track record. He has been terrific for them and has formed a wonderful partnership with Jay Rodriguez. If they go up it would be a positive thing for them to keep that duo together at the top of the pitch. From a Newcastle point of view, you would think they’d be open to selling him. The Magpies want their own loanee Salomon Rondon to stay beyond this campaign, so if the two parties could work a deal out for both players then everyone goes away happy. Plus, Gayle’s value will likely have increased after another fine goalscoring campaign. Ultimately it feels as if both Rondon and Gayle are destined to remain where they are at the moment, but we’ll have to wait and see.
