There haven’t been many attacking talents as precocious or exciting as Elias Sorensen in the Newcastle United academy for many years now.
The young Dane is a lethal goalscorer, and at 19, has the world at his feet.
After bagging 16 goals for the Magpies’ youth sides in the first half of this season, it made sense that he was given his chance to shine in the professional game in January with a move to Blackpool.
On the face of it it seemed like a good move. League One football with a side looking up rather than down, it should have been a great chance for the youngster to finally stake his claim for a senior spot with Rafa Benitez’s squad.
The reality has been a whole lot different, and instead of featuring regularly, as expected, Sorensen has registered a measly 32 minutes with the Seasiders.
It should come as little surprise, then that the Magpies have decided to recall him from his loan spell early, as announced by the club on Wednesday afternoon.
This is surely the right decision. Sorensen is a massive talent with the potential to go very far in the game, but he isn’t going to keep growing at the rate of knots that he has by sitting on the bench in the lower leagues.
Yes, a senior move would be preferable to playing under-23s football for the rest of the season, but any football is better than no football, and at least his way he gets to be involved with his parent club on a daily basis.
It’s not ideal, but ripping up this blunder of a deal could prove to be the best decision the Toon Army could have made.
