Is it time to worry about Almiron?

Patience is important as a football fan, but it’s not something that is always employed by the faithful followers of the beautiful game.

That’s why it would be no surprise to see many Newcastle United supporters sweating over the recent form of club record signing Miguel Almiron, particularly after he flamed out in Paraguay’s 1-0 defeat to Peru on Friday night.

The 25-year-old is a tremendous talent, there’s no doubt about that, but he’s not looked great in his last few games for club and country. He started off life at St James’ Park like a bat out of hell but he has quietened down somewhat of late.

Should Magpies fans be worried about him? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean they won’t. He hasn’t been great over the last few games and Rafael Benitez does need to figure out how best to unlock his potential.

We saw what a mediocre Almiron looks like on Friday. He seemingly couldn’t make any impact on the game and he finished the night having contributed next to nothing to the contest.

For someone with such unbelievable pace and technique, he can appear quite tepid at times. The Paraguayan needs to find his groove because his recent performances have majorly flattered to deceive.

Obviously he needs time to refine his game and to get used to English football, but he certainly needs to improve his end product, which was in evidence on Friday as well.

He will go on to have a terrific Magpies career, there’s no doubt about that, but questions will begin to be asked about him sooner or later, especially after another sub-par display.
