It remains to be seen just how Newcastle United will get on in this summer’s transfer window, as it is never known whether Mike Ashley will provide the relevant funds.

However, outgoings are just as important as incomings this summer, and that is particularly important in the case of centre-back Ciaran Clark, who has been sitting on the sidelines for the majority of this season.

A recent injury setback recently ruled him out of action, but it is safe to say that his 11 Premier League appearances tell a different story about his future at the club.

The 29-year-old is not going to get near the first team any time soon bar any serious setbacks, and this is no doubt down to the brilliance of Fabian Schar, Florian Lejeune and Jamaal Lascelles.

All three defenders have put in a decent shift in this campaign, and it is only right that boss Rafa Benitez rewards them for their consistent efforts.

However, where does this leave Clark? With a first team start unlikely to be on the horizon any time soon, the defender is no doubt considering his future carefully at St James’ Park.

Newcastle must sort out a loan exit for the £35,000-a-week [Spotrac] player, who despite having the talent, needs to get minutes under his belt – the one thing that is going to dictate his fate.

The fact that the Republic of Ireland international has not been utilised much this season despite the ability he has just goes to show how much defensive talent the Magpies actually have at their disposal.

One thing is for sure, Benitez will not be looking to strengthen this area in the summer – but loaning Clark out will give him the golden chance to show the manager what he is truly capable of and prevent his career from going down the drain at Newcastle.
