Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey feels that he has been unfairly written off while out injured recently, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the England international is unsettled having fallen down the midfield pecking order while sidelined earlier this season.

The 27-year-old is desperate to return to the starting line up away at Arsenal on Monday and is currently playing and training as if he has a point to prove.

He impressed off the bench against Everton, but was shunned for a starting spot in favour of the more industrious Mohamed Diame against Bournemouth last time out.

OPINION

This is a very interesting tid-bit from The Chronicle. It’s been quite the fall from grace from Shelvey at Newcastle this campaign. Going into the season it was merely a question of who would start alongside the Englishman in central midfield. Now, though, he’s fortunate if he gets a starting berth. To be fair, with Shelvey out injured Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden really took their chance. The former is now sidelined himself, of course, but the question now is who starts alongside the latter for the Magpies. Ki Sung-yueng and Diame have gotten the nod over Shelvey in the last two games, but it would be a surprise to see the former Swansea City man ignored once again by Rafael Benitez. He did well against Everton and so he’s in a nice little bit of form. Now he needs a start to be able to fully kick on. His passing ability, you would think, would be key against the Gunners. So we’ll see what happens.
